Ingredients

500g all-purpose flour
200g white sugar
4 tsp baking powder
0.5 tsp salt
0.25 tsp ground nutmeg, or to taste
115g cold butter, cubed
80ml milk
1 large egg

Directions

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 230°C (450°F) and grease an 8-inch baking pan.
Step 2
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Cut in the butter with 2 knives or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, beat together the milk and egg. Stir the milk mixture into the flour mixture until the batter is just blended. Spread the batter in the prepared baking pan.
Step 3
Bake in the preheated oven until golden, about 15 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing to cool completely on a wire rack.
