Ingredients

125 g brown sugar
15 g ground paprika
5 g dry mustard
1.25 g cayenne pepper
355 ml caffeinated pepper-type soda (e.g., Dr Pepper®)
180 ml ketchup
60 ml Worcestershire sauce
8 slices bacon
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
60 ml bourbon
2 cans (455 g each) baked beans with pork

Directions

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F).
Step 2
In a bowl, mix brown sugar, paprika, mustard, and cayenne pepper. Whisk in pepper soda, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce until the brown sugar is dissolved.
Step 3
Cut 4 slices of bacon into small strips. Cook in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until almost crispy, about 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, reserving the bacon grease.
Step 4
In the same Dutch oven, cook and stir the onion in the bacon grease until soft, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Pour in the bourbon, stirring to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom with a wooden spoon. Stir in the cooked bacon strips.
Step 5
Add the brown sugar mixture and baked beans to the Dutch oven. Simmer until the beans are heated through, about 15 minutes. Arrange the remaining 4 slices of bacon on top of the beans.
Step 6
Cover and bake in the preheated oven until the beans are bubbly and the sauce is syrupy, about 2.5 to 3 hours.
