Ingredients

1 cup packed brown sugar
0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
0.25 cup shortening
1.75 cups all-purpose flour
1.5 cups quick cooking oats
95 g caramel candies, unwrapped
1 tsp salt
0.5 tsp baking soda
4.5 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp all-purpose flour

Directions

1

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

2

First, make the crust: In a large bowl, beat together the brown sugar, butter, and shortening until smooth. Then, combine the flour, oats, baking soda, and salt. Stir this mixture into the creamed mixture until well blended. Set aside 2 cups of this mixture.

3

Press the remaining crust mixture onto the bottom of an ungreased 9x13-inch baking pan.

4

Toss apples with lemon juice in a medium bowl, then toss them with 2 tablespoons of flour. Arrange the apple mixture evenly over the prepared crust.

5

Melt the caramel candies in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently until smooth. Pour this over the apples.

6

Sprinkle the reserved oat mixture over the apples and gently press it down.

7

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.

8

Let the bars slightly cool before cutting, and refrigerate any leftovers.
