Ingredients

1 lb dry great Northern beans
0.5 lb cooked ham, diced
1 small onion, diced
0.5 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp dried parsley
0.25 tsp cayenne pepper
6 cups water, or as needed to cover

Directions

Soak the beans overnight or for at least 8 hours.

Drain and rinse the beans; return them to a large pot. Add the ham, onion, brown sugar, parsley, and cayenne pepper.

Pour in enough water to cover the ingredients and season with salt and pepper.
